Redirecting Your Focus

Let’s get real: what do you spend most of your time thinking about? I’m talking about the thoughts that take over your day—the ones that shape how you feel and what you do. Is it a career goal, a relationship, how much money you have in your bank account, or maybe the worry of what tomorrow holds? For some, it’s a fear that seems to never go away. We all have something that seems to grab hold of us, don’t we?

Here’s the truth: what fills your thoughts the most reveals what you truly treasure, and Jesus said it best: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).

I’ll never forget seventh grade. Like most 12-year-old boys, I thought I had life figured out. But one day, sitting in the school auditorium, my world stopped. A girl—one of the prettiest in school—sang Whitney Houston’s The Greatest Love of All, and her voice was nothing short of angelic. My heart raced, my palms sweated, and in that moment, she became my entire focus. For weeks, I thought about her morning, noon, and night. I even wrote letters I never had the courage to deliver. Looking back, I laugh at how consumed I was. But the lesson remains: we all have something—or someone—that captures our hearts. The question is, does it truly deserve that place?

Proverbs 4:23 gives a powerful warning: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” What you allow to capture your heart shapes your life. If it’s money, fame, or even a relationship, you might find yourself constantly chasing, yet never satisfied. It’s like chasing after something that keeps moving just out of reach. That’s not peace. That’s exhaustion.

Let me make it personal. I’m a dad, and my daughter means the world to me. But what kind of relationship would I have with her if I only spent a couple minutes a day with her? Could I call that a real relationship? No way. But how often do we do the same thing with God—giving Him the leftovers of our time while we pour everything into other things? That’s a tough truth to face, isn’t it?

Psalm 37:4 says, “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” But here’s the catch: we can’t truly delight in God if we’re consumed by everything but Him. It’s like saying, “I love you” to someone while texting someone else the whole time. You’re not really giving yourself.

Sometimes, God wakes us up in the middle of the night, trying to get our attention. But what do we do? We roll over, trying to go back to sleep, unaware that this might be the moment God is trying to speak directly to you. He's not just trying to disrupt your rest—He's calling you to something more. Imagine missing out on the chance to connect with the One who created you, simply because you’re too distracted by everything else. God doesn’t want your spare moments; He wants all of you. So the next time you’re woken in the middle of the night, stop and say, "Here I am, God. I’m listening." You never know how much you might need to hear from Him.

Here’s the hard truth: Anything that takes up more space in your life than God will eventually let you down. Money fades. Careers shift. People disappoint. But God’s love and purpose? They never fail. When He’s the center of your life, you'll find a peace and fulfillment that nothing on earth can give. And once you begin to see everything through that lens, your whole perspective will change.

Let me challenge you: take a moment to reflect on what’s truly at the center of your life. What’s sitting on the throne of your heart right now? Is it God, or something else?

If it’s not God, don’t worry. Change starts with just one step.

Ask God to help realign your focus on Him. Start by making time for God every day, even if it’s just a small step toward a deeper connection. It’s not about perfection—it’s about being consistent. A real relationship with God begins with a daily commitment, and over time, your heart will align with your devotion.

Here’s a prayer to help you begin: Dear God, thank You for loving me even when my heart is distracted. Show me what has taken Your place in my life, and help me to realign my focus on You. Teach me to delight in You above all else, and fill me with a peace that only You can give. Amen.

Your heart will always chase after something. The question is, will it chase after something temporary—or something eternal? And remember, if you want God to be your top priority, it’s not enough just to say it. You’ve got to show up and live it.

God wants more than just your time; He wants your whole heart. And when you give it to Him, everything else falls into place.

Let today be the day you realign your focus. Let this be the moment you choose Him above all else. You've got this, and I believe in you!
